Mexican’t Sydney
The latest addition to the TexMex craze overtaking Sydney is Zambrero Fresh Mex Grill. While we were initially impressed with it as alternative to the over hyped Mad Mex we later discovered that the beans are not vegan (cooked in butter) and the huge organic sign on the far wall applies to the chicken only, everything else is conventional. As it currently stands, if you want a great burrito in this city you have to travel to Melbourne for Trippy Taco, although the Bondi Beach Burrito Co (pictured below) would have an honourable mention if they could work out how to make guacamole.

Bondi beach burritos
Sydney’s current trend for Mexican fast food has just hit Bondi. Beach Burrito Company is a semi-decent attempt at bring the best of Southern California (at twice the price) to Sydney. While the vegetarian pickings are slim they are certainly better than Gozmen Y Gomez and more creative than Mad Mex. VeganSydney’s pick would be the tofu and wood roasted vegetables burrito (sans cheese), while not 100% authentic, if they would just sort out their the guacamole it would be the best vegetarian burrito in Sydney at the moment.
Mexican’t do a decent vegetarian burrito
The Guzmen Y Gomez Mexican fast food chain has taken the BBQ tofu burrito off the menu. This leaves the only vegetarian option a bean-less, protein-less slop of overcooked vegetables in a tortilla. Email them at info@guzmanygomez.com and ask why they feel their vegetarian customers should be treated to second class menus.
VeganSydney hearts Fiji Market
From green tomato salsa to $2 vegetarian Indian microwave meals, black and pinto beans by the 10kg bag and more spice than you can poke a cinnamon stick at Fiji Market seems to have it all. 591 (South) King St., Newtown.
Outrageously average Mexican
We’ve been holding of reviewing Mad Mex for close to a year. As self-confessed addicts for great Tex-Mex and SoCal Mexican we were hoping things would get better. Despite all the hype of Crown Street’s newest fast food eatery we have to say its average at best. Similar to Iku after a few meals everything starts to taste the same. They’ve taken a great idea and watered it down. Corn chips, while originally handmade, are now the cheap supermarket ‘Doritos’ variety, servings are small and they frequently run of key ingredients (such as guacamole, tortillas). While it is worthy of the occasional late night take away if in the vicinity, all said and done this is outrageously average Mexican.

South of the Border
Finally a decent Mexican take-away has opened in Sydney. Located at 40 Darlinghurst Rd, Kings Cross Tomatillo Mexican Grill is the best of Southern California at twice the price. While the vegetarian options are numerous the vegan pickings are substantially slimmer due to the excessive reliance on sour cream and cheese. All that said they are open late, you can ask to ‘hold the cheese’, they serve Mexican beer and the vegetarian burritos are fresh and delicious. It is also welcome change to see the Guzman Y Gomez (review coming shortly) monopoly broken. Lets hope this is the start of a trend and we’ll see as many Mexican joints as Sushi or Thai restaurants in Sydney’s foreseeable future.
